Ben told me I could go round his and watch his cat smelling a radiator, but he phoned at the last minute to say that all plans were cancelled because Top of the Pops was on later. "That's fine", I said, "but it's only a Tuesday". "Wait for it", he bellowed, "it'll be the best Top of the Pops ever".
Increasingly hopeful, I got in the bath 75 minutes early without even looking at the Amiga. A deflated bath pillow later, I climbed the three piece suite with an ill-advised plate of Red Leicester. What happened next is impossible to describe accurately, and if I hadn't made it up I could never be sure that it actually happened. Patrick McGoohan, having joined Bananarama, found that he couldn't leave. Geoff Crammond and David Braben programmed basslines for Erasure whilst Malcolm Barnecutt slapped a Rickenbacker with a crimp. Best of all was the announcer. This wasn't Simon Bates, Peter Powell or Mike Read, it was Top of the Pops with Murray Walker!
I phoned Ben to congratulate him as Johnny Herbert in the Stewart took the checkered flag to win. Words fail me.
